Current Notices

Travel notices are designed to inform travelers and clinicians about current health issues related to specific destinations.   • Updated  Ebola in LiberiaUpdated June 19, 2014As of March 31, 2014, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) of Liberia reported confirmed cases of Ebola in Lofa District, Liberia. CDC recommends that travelers to Liberia avoid contact with blood and body fluids of infected people to protect themselves.Read More >>
  • Updated  Polio in IraqUpdated June 19, 2014According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, as of May 29, 2014, 2 cases of polio have been reported in a near Baghdad. Before 2014, no cases had been reported from Iraq since 2000.Read More >>
  • Updated  Polio in SyriaUpdated June 19, 2014According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, 36 cases (1 case in 2014) of polio have been reported from the Syrian Arab Republic (Syria) since the outbreak began in 2013. Due to conflict in the region, immunization rates have dramatically decreased. CDC recommends that all travelers to Syria be fully vaccinated against polio. In addition, adults should receive a one-time booster dose of polio vaccine.Read More >>
  • Updated  Ebola in GuineaUpdated June 19, 2014According to the Ministry of Health of Guinea, cases of Ebola have been confirmed in Conakry, Guékédou, Kissidougou, Macenta, Dabola, and Djingaraye prefectures. There are confirmed cases in Liberia. Suspected cases in border areas of Sierra Leone are being investigated. CDC recommends that travelers to these areas avoid contact with blood and body fluids of infected people to protect themselves.Read More >>
  • Updated  Polio in SomaliaUpdated June 19, 2014According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, as of June 5, 2014, 2 cases have been reported in Somalia for 2014. In 2013, 194 cases of polio were reported from Somalia. These are the first wild poliovirus cases reported in Somalia since 2007. CDC recommends that all travelers to Somalia be fully vaccinated against polio. In addition, adults should receive a one-time booster dose of polio vaccine.Read More >>
  • Updated  Ebola in Sierra LeoneUpdated June 19, 2014As of May 27, 2014, the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health reported 7 confirmed cases of and several deaths from Ebola in Kailahun District, Sierra Leone. CDC recommends that travelers to Sierra Leone avoid contact with blood and body fluids of infected people to protect themselves.Read More >>
  • Updated  Polio in Equatorial GuineaUpdated June 19, 2014As of June 12, 2014, 4 cases of polio have been reported from Equatorial Guinea. Before 2014, no cases had been reported in Equatorial Guinea since 1999. CDC recommends that all travelers to Equatorial Guinea be fully vaccinated against polio.   • New!  Schistosomiasis in Corsica (France)Released June 13, 2014According to the European Centre for Disease Control, 6 people were infected with schistosomiasis on the island of Corsica (France). All of the travelers were exposed to the freshwater in the Cavu River and had not traveled to other areas where schistosomiasis is known to occur. CDC recommends that travelers to the island of Corsica avoid exposure to freshwater to prevent schistosomiasis.Read More >>
  • New!  Hajj and Umrah in Saudi ArabiaReleased June 04, 2014The annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is among the largest mass gatherings in the world. Hajj draws about 3 million Muslims from around the world, and more than 11,000 Americans make the pilgrimage each year. This year, Hajj will take place from approximately October 2–7, 2014. Umrah is a similar pilgrimage that can be undertaken at any time of the year, but it is likely to be more crowded during the month of Ramadan (approximately June 28 to July 28, 2014) than at other times of the year.Read More >>
  • Updated  MERS in the Arabian PeninsulaUpdated May 21, 2014Cases of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) have been identified in multiple countries in the Arabian Peninsula. There have also been cases in several other countries in travelers who have been to the Arabian Peninsula and, in some instances, their close contacts. If you are traveling to countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula,* CDC recommends that you pay attention to your health during and after your trip.Read More >>
  • Polio in CameroonUpdated April 17, 2014As of January 31, 2014, 3 cases of polio have been reported in Cameroon for 2014. There were also 4 cases reported in 2013. This outbreak of polio is the first reported in Cameroon since 2009.Read More >>
  • Polio in KenyaUpdated April 10, 2014According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, in 2013, 14 polio cases were reported from Kenya. These are the first wild poliovirus cases reported in Kenya since July 2011. CDC recommends that all travelers to Kenya be fully vaccinated against polio.   • Polio in EthiopiaUpdated April 10, 2014ffAccording to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, in 2013, ten cases (one case in 2014) were reported from the Somali Region of Ethiopia. These are the first wild poliovirus cases reported in Ethiopia since 2008. CDC recommends that all travelers to Ethiopia be fully vaccinated against polio.   • Updated  Zika Fever in Easter IslandUpdated June 19, 2014On January 28, 2014, the Ministry of Health of Chile confirmed their first locally acquired case of Zika fever in a resident of Easter Island. The Ministry of Health is working to control the outbreak. CDC recommends that travelers to Easter Island protect themselves from mosquito bites.Read More >>

  • Updated  Zika Fever in New CaledoniaUpdated June 19, 2014The Board for Health and Social Affairs of New Caledonia has confirmed an outbreak of Zika fever. As of May 7, 2014, 1,262 cases have been laboratory confirmed. The government of New Caledonia is working to control the outbreak. CDC recommends that travelers to New Caledonia protect themselves from mosquito bites.Read More >>
  • Updated  Measles in the PhilippinesUpdated June 19, 2014According to the World Health Organization, about 40,000 cases of measles (31,508 suspected cases and 9,149 confirmed cases) and 70 measles deaths were reported in the Philippines from January 1 through May 20, 2014. CDC recommends that travelers to the Philippines protect themselves by making sure they are vaccinated against measles. Clinicians should keep measles in mind when treating patients with fever and rash, especially if the patient has recently traveled internationally.Read More >>
  • Updated  Avian Flu (H7N9) in ChinaUpdated June 19, 2014According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been more than 400 confirmed human cases of avian influenza A (H7N9) with more than 125 deaths reported from China since April 2013 and one case from Malaysia. CDC recommends travelers not touch animals, eat food that is fully cooked, and practice regular hand washing to protect themselves.Read More >>
  • Updated  Cholera in CubaUpdated June 19, 2014According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Cuban health authorities have reported more than 700 cases of cholera, including 3 deaths, since July 2012. The outbreak is ongoing, and cases have been reported from the provinces of Artemisa, Camaguey, Granma, Guantanamo, Havana, and Santiago de Cuba. Several cases were reported in travelers returning from Cuba, including travelers from the United States.Read More >>
  • Updated  Cholera in HaitiUpdated June 19, 2014An outbreak of cholera has been ongoing in Haiti since October 2010. Cases continue to be reported but in smaller numbers than earlier in the outbreak. Cases have been reported in all 10 departments of Haiti.Read More >>

  • Updated  Zika Fever in French Polynesia (Tahiti)Updated June 19, 2014The French Polynesia Department of Health has confirmed an outbreak of Zika fever in the islands of Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora, Huahine, Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa, Ua Pou, Hao, Rangiroa, Fakarava, Tikehau, Takaroa Ahe and Arutua. The Department of Health is working to improve surveillance. CDC recommends that travelers to French Polynesia protect themselves from mosquito bites.Read More >>
  • Updated  Chikungunya in the CaribbeanUpdated June 17, 2014In December 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported cases of chikungunya in Saint Martin. Additional cases were reported in other islands in the Caribbean. This is the first time that local transmission of chikungunya has been reported in the Americas.   • New!  Sarcocystosis in MalaysiaReleased June 13, 2014CDC has received reports of more than 6 patients with suspected acute muscular sarcocystosis. Because sarcocystosis is spread through food or water contaminated with animal waste, travelers are advised to avoid contact with animals, to eat and drink safe food and water, and to wash hands frequently.Read More >>
  • New!  Measles in VietnamReleased June 02, 2014According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, about 8,700 suspected measles cases and 112 deaths from measles were reported in Vietnam as of April 18, 2014. CDC recommends that travelers to Vietnam protect themselves by making sure they are vaccinated against measles. Clinicians should keep measles in mind when treating patients with fever and rash, especially if the patient has recently traveled internationally.Read More >>
  • Chikungunya in TongaReleased April 18, 2014As of April 9, 2014, 20 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the Kingdom of Tonga. The Kingdom of Tonga is an independent Polynesian sovereign state made up of 176 islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. CDC recommends that travelers to Tonga protect themselves from mosquito bites.Read More >>

  • Zika Fever in Cook IslandsReleased April 07, 2014Health authorities in the Cook Islands have reported an outbreak of Zika fever. This is the first time that Zika fever has been reported in the Cook Islands. As of March 23, 2014, 49 laboratory-confirmed cases and 648 suspected cases have been reported. The areas of Rarotonga and Aitutaki are most affected by the outbreak. Health authorities are working to control the outbreak.Read More >>
  • Cholera in MexicoUpdated December 20, 2013There have been 184 confirmed cholera cases, including one death, reported in Mexico since August 2013. Mexican health authorities continue to work to control the outbreak.Read More >>
